Like the berk who kicked the encroaching owl in Colombia, a player – Enzo Jimenez of Argentinian regional side Club Bella Vista to be precise – found himself ejected from the pitch at the weekend for severe animal cruelty.

During the game in Tucuman, a dog meandered onto the field and brought play to a halt. In a bid to get things underway again, Jimenez grabbed the dog by its neck, carried it across to the touchline and then attempted to hurl the poor thing over the high stadium fencing and into the terraces.

The dog hit the top of the fence and fell back to pitchside and limped away, while Jimenez was quite rightly administered with a red card – though not before pleading his case with the referee…

I mean, we’re not remotely “dog people” here at Pies, but even we found that shocking. We reckon Senor Jimenez can expect a fine, possible ban and an awful lot of heat from animal rights bods over that one.
