Well, that was awkward! Having been on gardening leave for the past month or so, Brighton chose the perfect moment to announce to the world that Gus Poyet had been sacked as their manager – just as he was providing punditry for the Confederations Cup game between Spain and Nigeria live on BBC television!
The news was broken to Poyet at half-time, with Mark Chapman informing the Uruguayan that he was newly unemployed in a skin-crawlingly awkward segment as the BBC host read out sections of Brighton’s official club statement:
“Gus Poyet has been informed today by Brighton & Hove Albion football club’s internal disciplinary panel that his employment has been terminated with immediate effect.”
Yep, informed live on air by a man reading out your statement.
