We join the action here during yesterday’s Lithuanian Cup quarter-final between Kruoja and Zalgiris with the home side 1-0 up and bearing down on goal in pursuit of a second goal to put the tie to bed with ten minutes left to play.

Having latched onto a long ball over the top, Kruoja’s striker rolled the ball past the advancing ‘keeper with ease and began wheeling away in celebration as his shot trundled toward the goal.

Unfortunately, Zalgiris had seen fit to employ a strategically-placed muddy quagmire slap, bang in the middle of their goalmouth which duly swallowed up the ball before it got close to crossing the line, with the Zalgiris ‘keeper able to walk over and merely pluck the stationary ball from the bog…

Great save! Inspired by the hard work being put in by their puddle-sweeper, Zalgiris then went and scored twice in the 89th and 90th minute to stun Kruoja and knock them out of the cup.

Never fear Kruoja fans, we’re sure there are hundreds and thousands of ex-Sunday League players out there who can sympathise to some degree!
