In which, in collaboration with the Opkikker Foundation, Ajax put on a special day for ill eight-year-old fan Jay-Jay Willems in a bid to give the poor kid a well-deserved break from the mundane medication ritual he is forced to follow due to his chronic bowel disorder.

First of all, Jay-Jay was given a VIP tour of the Amsterdam Arena before being ‘signed’ by the club and unveiled to the media by head coach Frank de Boer at a press conference (complete with media punditry). He was then allowed to warm-up with the first team ahead of their Eredivisie tie with NAC Breda before being presented to the crowd via the big screen and going on to make his full debut by taking part in a ceremonial kick-off…

Speaking at Jay-Jay’s ‘unveiling’, De Boer says:

“I would like to introduce a new player. Jay-Jay is a left forward and during training he got our attention. With his qualities we think he eventually can play with the first team.”

Wonderful stuff. A doff of the cap is definitely due all-round.
