Godoy Cruz beat River Plate 2-1 in the Argentinian Primera Division on Thursday evening with the winning goal coming late in the day courtesy of Julio Rodriguez’s 93rd-minute strike.
This did not go down well with the 50,000 River fans in attendance, with the home support erupting as Godoy escaped with all three points with the last meaningful kick of the game.
Indeed, one River fan was so incensed that he hurled a piece of wood down at the Godoy players as they huddled jubilantly on the pitch, with the shard hitting Leandro Grimi square between the shoulder blades…
Thankfully, Grimi wasn’t seriously injured by the flying timber, though River Plate have still vowed to root out the perpetrator and ban him/her/almost definitely him from attending games, with club president Rodolfo D’Onofrio telling TyC Sports after the game:
“You can’t punish 50,000 fans because of one idiot who causes damage. He evidently broke off a part of the stand because he didn’t get in with that (wood).
“We’re searching for him on the cameras to identify him and apply the maximum sanction… to expel him. We don’t want people like that coming into a football ground ever again.”
Hear, hear.
