Riot police were forced to storm the pitch and intervene at the end of last night’s Copa Libertadores game between Independiente del Valle of Ecuador and San Lorenzo of Argentina, when the visitors took umbrage at a penalty awarded to the hosts in the 95th-minute.
Leading 0-1 at the time, San Lorenzo conceded the spot-kick seconds full-time which was duly dispatched by Independiente’s Junior Sornoza to level the tie with, for all intents and purposes, the final touch of the game.
San Lorenzo then erupted as the sound of the full-time whistle sparked ugly scenes as livid players swarmed around the referee and his officials in an attempt to take out their frustrations on him/them…
