Dynamo Kiev’s game against Dnipro Dnipropetrovsk in the Ukrainian top flight on Sunday played host to some truly remarkable scenes wherein, following a grim collision with the Dnipro ‘keeper Denis Boyko, Dynamo captain Oleg Gusev quite possibly had his life saved thanks to the quick-response first aid administration of an opposing player.

Early on in the game, Gusev was knocked out cold and slumped to the ground after running head-first into Boyko’s knee as the Dnipro ‘keeper leapt to catch a high ball.

With his airways blocked by his own tongue, Gusev was unable to breathe as he lay there unconscious on the pitch until Dnipro midfielder Jaba Kankava noticed that was the case and immediately rreached into his prone opponent’s throat to pull his tongue clear as his team-mates helped roll Gusev onto his side…

We’re pleased to be able to report that Gusev later regained consciousness after being taken to hospital, where he continues to recover – largely thanks to Kankava’s swift actions.

Well played that man. Well played indeed.
