Well, “retro football-ish”, at least.

Originally aired on April 1st, 1989: here’s the classic “Grandstand Fight” April Fools sketch which saw a staged scuffle break out in the newsroom while omni-suave presenter Des Lynam expertly deadpanned away in front of the whole thing…

Brilliant stuff and, if memory serves, realistic enough to garner several concerned complaints from members of the public.

Oh lord, how we miss Des…silky, silky Des.

Come to think of it, it’d be entirely remiss of us to bring Grandstand into the equation and not mention that truly outstanding theme music…

(Coming via Reddit, but many thanks to Pies fan Allen for refreshing our memories about this one!)

Absolutely quality. Love the replay of it and the commentary of it. Thanks Pies!

Good old Des. Another BBC presenter who chased the ITV coin and saw his career tail off into nothing.
Saw him interviewed on some sports doc a few weeks ago…boy does he look old. What massively contributed to him looking so old was the “old man toungue thing” he was doing with his tongue where after every sentence he was kind of half sticking his tongue out to dampen his lower lip. A bit like Gordon Browns mouth tick.
