Iran 0-0 Nigeria – World Cup Group F – 16th June 2014
The first really dour game of the 2014 World Cup had to come sometime and this clash certainly failed to spark into life. Nigeria had most of the ball but lacked a real cutting edge against an Iran side who were well-drilled by boss Carlos Quiroz.
Lazio midfielder Ogenyi Onazi went close for the African giants while Charlton’s Reza Ghoochannejad forced a good save from in-form ‘keeper Vincent Enyeama but not even the introduction of lumbering ex-Newcastle man Shola Ameobi could break the deadlock for Stephen Keshi’s side.
Not the greatest game but in many ways it was refreshing to see a proper old fashioned tight game, dull and dour but a certain intriguing balance to it!
