Louis Van Gaal’s Dutch side were given a right shock by a hungry, attack-minded Australian side on Wednesday, with the Socceroos pushing the Netherlands all the way.

Arjen Robben opened the scoring on 20 minutes rather against the run of play after the underdogs had started the game superbly. But just over a minute later Australia were level courtesy of a magnificent Tim Cahill effort.

After the break, the Dutch went behind courtesy of Mile Jedinak’s spot-kick with a major shock on the cards. However, the introduction of Memphis Depay just after the break eventually reap rewards for Van Gall and co, with the Eindohoven winger setting up Robin Van Persie to score before netting the winner himself.

Overall the game could’ve gone either way and after the Netherlands’ mauling of Spain, this was quite a wake-up call for one of the tournaments’ dark horses.
