The frame of the Brazilian goal would prove to be the undoing of Chile in Saturday’s Last 16 clash against the hosts. Firstly, with the scores at 1-1 and time almost up, sub Mauricio Pinilla thundered an effort against the bar before later on, Gonzalo Jara’s shoot-out spot-kick hit the post to hand the hosts victory.

David Luiz had, somewhat fortuitously, opened the scoring on 18 minutes in a game which saw Chile give as good as they got. Indeed, Alexi Sanchez’s equaliser on the half-hour mark was well deserved. The hosts struggled to click with the likes of Fred and Oscar struggling to get into the game.

Another player who has underperformed so far is Hulk although the attacker did have the ball in the back of the net. only for Howard Webb to correctly spot a handball. Both sides had chances to win the game but ultimately, after Pinilla’s late effort hit the woodwork, it would be decided by spot-kicks.

Julio Cesar was the hero for the Brazilians, saving from both Pinilla and Sanchez, meaning that the failure of both Hulk and Willian to convert their spot-kicks proved meaningless as Jara fired against the post.

Brazil go through, but will have to up their game if they are to overcome Colombia in the quarter-finals.
