Romania 2-0 Northern Ireland – Euro 2016 Qualifiers – 14th November 2014

A brace from Steaua Bucharest’s Paul Papp sent Northern Ireland to their first defeat of the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign. Michael O’Neill’s men had gone into the game on the back of a three-game winning streak but found their hosts too strong.

The goals didn’t come until the 74th and 79th minute, although for long periods of the game the Romanians looked the better side. The North did create a few chances themselves, with Chris Brunt and Kyle Lafferty both going close but ultimately the visitors couldn’t find a cutting edge.

While Romania go top of Group F with 10 points from four games, Northern Ireland still find themselves in a healthy second spot, just a point behind the group leaders.
