We don’t claim to be experts on the subject but we’re guessing that the list of “beautiful goals scored by the Liechtenstein national side” isn’t exactly Ulyssean in length – especially what with them only scoring 68 goals in their 158-game existence and all.

To that end, we think we can confidently state that Marco Perez’s top-corner curler in 1996 against Germany (who would go on to be crowned European Champions just 26 days later) is, beyond all reasonable doubt, the finest goal the Ländle-Kickers have ever proffered forth.

Making his first ever international appearance against the likes of Mathias Sammer, Jurgen Klinsmann, Andy Moller and Oliver Bierhoff, 18-year-old débutante Perez scored what proved to be Liechstenstein’s sole consolation goal in a 9-1 friendly battering – but what a bloody stunner it was…

Alas, his fairytale debut against Die Mannschaft proved to be Perez’s one and only appearance for his country.

You may be surprised to learn that, at the grand old age of 36, the veteran midfielder is still plugging away at Austrian fifth-tier club ASK-BSC Bruck/Leitha.

If nothing else, he’s got himself one hell of an anecdote to pull out at dinner parties.
