With roughly half-an-hour left and Barcelona leading 2-1, Sunday evening’s Clasico came perilously close to descending into the usual stop/start, fragmented, bitchy dive-fest.

Thankfully, after a fractious ten-minute spell where a red card or two seemed inevitable (11 bookings were administered in total), things began levelling out again as Barca cruised to victory.

However, that wasn’t before Javier Mascherano could plumb the depths of poor sportsmanship with an embarrassingly histrionic attempt to get Cristiano Ronaldo in trouble…

*Sigh*

  1. Pete says:

Embarrassing to be sure, but the game was littered with these. Pepe had a couple of world class dives as did Ronnie himself. Have classicos always been this divey? Don’t remember them being quite this bad.

  2. Fat Nakago says:

I love how Messi strolls by, give him a cursory look, and probably thinks to himself, “Whatta doof…” (in glorious Espanol) as he moves along.

  3. Captain Obvious says:

I was about to write what Fat Nakago wrote. Messi looks and knows his teammate (and countryman!) is a diving, melodramatic piece of sh*t who is faking an injury. I’m not a Barca fan – I don’t like Barca fans as a general rule – but there are some true ones out there who deserve better than that DB.

  4. Adam says:

Let’s just remind ourselves that this was Roy hodgsons world player of the year vote!

  5. Harry Catknapp says:

This is why I don’t watch the clasico anymore, this type of behaviour sucks all the enjoyment out of it for me,just a bunch of kids squabbling Mascerano,Busquets Pepe,Jordi Alba, Ramos are always the usual offenders. Used to love watching it when Zidane,Ronaldo and Figo played.

  6. Rob says:

Holding his face is embarrassing but it does like Ronaldo tries to stud him in the bollocks before that

  7. Jarren says:

I have a gut feeling that one day a player will be horribly hacked to the ground, get up, and offer his hand to the offender.

“Hey, it’s ok fellow sportsman. I actually did feel some quite considerable pain from your challenge, but as I know you were honestly going for the ball I respect your commitment to the game of football. Let’s shake hands and get on with things.”

    Mark my words, it’s coming.

And on that day this shitfest of deceit will die.

Should have got a yellow for the tackle and a yellow for the dive. Send him off, that would stop it.
