Forget the ‘Who’s the best player in the world?’ pissing contest and simply enjoy the genius that is Little Leo Messi. Here he is taking apart Real Zaragoza at the weekend:

Just wow, especially the second goal.

I have no idea how Leo manages to combine such speed of thought and foot. It’s all very well to run fast, but to run that fast with the ball at your feet – but also to make the right decisions about what to do with the ball – is mindblowing.

Messi’s run to win Barca’s penalty – converted by Zlatan Ibrahmiovic for their fourth and final goal – was arguably even better than any of his goals:

I watched this live and spent pretty much the entire match letting out audible gasps. Whenever he got on the ball I’d lean forward in anticipation.

I can’t really describe how much I love to see him play. I suppose it’s because he reminds you of how we all used to try and play when we were kids. Running at players, inventing it all as you went along. Of course, 99.9% of us fell at the first, maybe second, hurdle. But you get the impression Messi could start in his own box and beat all 10 outfield players.

I reckon in this day and age of sideways passes and tactical awareness, this sort of wing-play is rare. That’s why Messi is such a breath of fresh air to us all. Despite the pressure of being a talisman for one of the greatest clubs in world football, he seems to play with absolute freedom.

Great comment, Philando. Couldn’t agree more.
