He took two stabs at it but Lionel Messi eventually prodded home his 400th goal for Barcelona in their 2-0 win over Valencia yesterday.

This all coming after Luis Suarez (who received a standing ovation after being subbed off) opened the scoring for the league-leaders in the very first minute of the game…

(The official La Liga highlights are available here, should our video be stripped)

So that’s 400 goals for Messi in 471 competitive games and he’s still only 27 years old. Insane.

No wonder he celebrated with a little lie down – the poor sod must be knackered!

Over in Madrid, Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player in Spanish football history to score 50 – fifty! – goals in five consecutive seasons by sticking away Real’s third in their 3-1 victory over Malaga.

Madness. Complete and utter madness.

It’s high time all of Messi and Ronaldo’s historical football stats and records be separated into their own special elite column just to redress the balance and give everybody else a chance.

Worth clarifying that Ronaldo has scored 50 goals in each season overall, not in La Liga history. Messi remains the only player to hit 50 league goals in Spain.

@Andy: Quite right. Got a little bit excited there. It should read “Spanish football” history, not solely La Liga.

    Well done Messi!

Even still, I would like to see him try to grab 35-40 goals in the Premiership.

Could he? Could Ronaldo now, at his peak?

I guess we’ll never know the answer to that.

@ Jarren, Messi can score 35-40 goals on the moon let alone the EPL!!

I congratulate Messi on his milestone but in all fairness it is easier these days to tally up the goals in a career / season than it was years ago … a player of Messi’s ability gets to play in almost double the games other old players used to for example Gerd Muller had to play 15 years for Bayern Munich just to reach 453 games (how times have changed)
