We feel we really must congratulate Luis Fabiano for his wild, engrossing am-dram performance during Wednesday evening’s Copa Libertadores clash between Sao Paulo and Corinthians, in which the 34-year-old former Sevilla striker managed to get himself sent-off for a truly marvellous play-acting.
Eschewing understated naturalism, Fabiano instead opted for a more classic melodramatic approach to his craft while pretending to have been clobbered in the face by Corinthians midfielder John Stiven Mendoza in the second half.
After taking a split-second to establish eye contact with his audience (the referee), Fabiano then proceeded to flail to the deck like a dead squid being casually tossed out of a second storey window…
The philistine referee, obviously not an appreciator of the theatrical arts, was steadfastly unimpressed and duly administered a yellow card – Fabiano’s second of the game.
Mendoza was then also sent packing for his part in the production.
Sao Paulo went on to win 2-0 but it mattered not, for the real winner that night was…
