Despite getting to the 86th minute with a full compliment of personnel to their name, Peruvian side Club Alianza Lima somehow managed to end their recent Primera Division game against league leaders Real Garcilaso having had four players sent-off and their coach banished from the touchline.

The mass exodus was the result of an extraordinary three-minute disciplinary blitz that saw Gabriel Costa (violent conduct), Pablo Miguez (second bookable offence), Marcos Miers and Christian Cueva (both dissent) all red-carded by referee Ramon Blanco for a smorgasbord of transgressions.

Just to cap it all off, coach Guillermo Sanguinetti was then also sent-off in the 90th minute for steaming onto the pitch to complain. The ironing is delicious.

The Peruvian referee’s association stood by their man, publicly congratulating referee Blanco for his grace under pressure after the game.

“The Professional Football Referees’ Association welcomes and congratulates Mr Blanco for proper arbitration today in the stadium Alejandro Villanueva. Very good job, Ramon!”

How nice of them – though to be fair, you can’t say any of the little brats didn’t deserve it.

It seems that occupations don’t get much more challenging than South American football referee. It’s like trying to contain a whirlwind in a paper bag most of the time!

We ‘umbly doff our cap.
