At this stage, Lionel Messi has long since transcended hyperbole, with the Argentinian wizard already cementing his place as the greatest player ever to play football. On Wednesday night against Sporting Gijon, the Barcelona star broke yet another record, this time becoming the first player to reach the 300-goal milestone in La Liga.

After eschewing the chance to hit the big 300-mark last time out against Celta Vigo, instead passing his penalty to Luis Suarez, Messi finally reached the milestone in the 25th minute of Barca’s home league clash with Sporting Gijon at the Nou Camp. Picking up the ball outside the box, the 28-year-old walloped the ball low and hard into the corner of the net to put the hosts 1-0 up…

Six minutes later, Messi added a second to put him on 301, 50 goals ahead of Athletic Bilbao legend Telo Zarra (who played in the 1940s and 1950s) and 55 ahead of a certain Cristiano Ronaldo. Considering Messi’s haul have come in just 334 La Liga games, that really is some achievement.

Barca ultimately won the game 3-1 to go six points clear at the top of La Liga. After the game, Messi’s club released this rather fine video encapsulating some of the player’s best moments with the Catalan giants…
