Japan well and truly trounced Syria on Tuesday evening, sticking five unanswered goals past their opponents on the night to finish top of their World Cup qualifying group.

A late three-goal salvo saw Japan round out the scoring in the last six minutes, but it was their 17th-minute opener that grabbed Pies’ eye.

Indeed, it was Syrian defender Hamdi Al Masri who was the unfortunate fall guy when his ‘keeper came barrelling out to punch a cross clear, only to accidentally thump the ball directly into his centre-half’s face at point-blank range…
