Dark horses Croatia got their Euro 2016 campaign off to a winning start in Paris on Sunday, deservedly beating Turkey 1-0. The winning goal was a thing of beauty, with Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric showing superb technique to execute a perfect, dipping volley.

The only goal of the game came just before half-time, with Modric watching a high clearance before volleying home from long-range. Turkey ‘keeper Volkan Babacan arguably should’ve done better, but the strike from Modric was worthy of a match-winning goal.

Babacan wasn’t the only player at fault for the goal, with midfielder Ozan Turfan apparently more interested in fixing his hair than closing down Modric.

The Croats were well worth their victory, with both Darijo Srna and Ivan Perisic hitting the woodwork and Babacan forced into a number of good saves.

With their best side since the late 1990s when they secured a third-place finish at the 1998 World Cup , Croatia could well go far in France this summer.
