Germany picked up the gold medal in the Maracana on Friday night after a hard-fought Olympic final 2-1 win against Sweden.

Dzsenifer Marozsan put the reigning European champions ahead via a superb curling effort.

However, ultimately, it was a howler of an own-goal from Linda Sembrant which would hand the victory to the Germans.

The own-goal came after a superbly struck free-kick from Marozsan came back off the post, with defender Sembrant miscuing and firing into her own net…

Sweden did get one back, through Stina Blackstenius, and came close to securing an equaliser late on. However, overall, the Germans were deserving of the win, which came in legendary coach Silvia Neid’s last game in charge.

Now, it’s over to the German men on Saturday to make it a double in their final against hosts Brazil. As for Sembrant, maybe she should phone up Shane Duffy for some emotional support!

Come on. Linda had miliseconds to react and there three German players beside her. All she could do she did and unfortunately it went in her net.
