England booked their place in Russia next summer after man of the moment Harry Kane netted an injury-time winner against Slovenia at Wembley.
However, the game itself was a dismal spectacle, with the hosts turgid throughout.
Gareth Southgate started with Kane, named captain for the first time, alongside Raheem Sterling, Marcus Rashford and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
However, the hosts struggled to create much against a well-organised Slovenian side.
England’s midfield, without the suspended Dele Alli, was utterly devoid of creativity, with Oxlade-Chamberlain, subbed off on 64 minutes, once again having little impact on proceedings.
With the game headed towards a goalless draw, a result which would have nicely summed up the boring clash, Kane once again got on the scoresheet in the 94th minute.
Kyle Walker the creator, intercepting a wayward throw from ‘keeper Jan Oblak before producing a fine centre which was prodded home by his former Spurs team-mate.
That goal would win the game for Southgate’s side, who now progress to next summer’s finals, albeit after a thoroughly flaccid display on the night.
The Three Lions now find themselves six points clear at the top of Group F, having safely navigated their way to Russia.
However, one again questions remains as to whether Southgate and co. can make the step up from a relatively easy group stage to the cut and thrust of finals football.
