Northern Ireland’s quest for a place in next summer’s World Cup finally ended on Sunday night, with Michael O’Neill’s side losing out 1-0 on aggregate to Switzerland after a goalless draw in a rain-soaked Basel.
The Swiss came into the game one goal up, courtesy of that controversial Ricardo Rodriguez penalty in Belfast.
The hosts had numerous chances to take the lead in Basel, with striker Haris Seferovic missing chance after chance.
However, Northern Ireland produced a fine display themselves, with West Brom’s Chris Brunt going close on a couple of occasions.
Late on, Jonny Evans saw his header cleared off the line by Rodriguez as the visitors pushed for a goal.
However, in the end, Northern Ireland would see their hopes of a place in Russia next summer dashed by that one, dodgy penalty.
As for the Swiss, they make it to their fourth consecutive World Cup finals tournament.
