A single goal from the enchanted left boot of Lionel Messi was enough for Barcelona to see of Atletico Madrid and move eight points clear at the summit of La Liga on Sunday night.

The goal came 26 minutes in, when Messi made light work of another 25-yard freekick to nonchalantly waft an unstoppable shot up, over the wall and past one of the best goalkeepers in the world, Jan Oblak, into the top corner of the Atletico net like there was nobody stood in his way.

As well as shunting Barca ever closer to the league title, the goal also saw Messi bring up his sixth century of career goals – 600 goals for club and country in the space of 747 games over 14 seasons.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Diego Simeone was asked what his side could have done to usurp Barca on the night.

“If Messi had been wearing an Atlttico shirt, we would have won,” came the sullen reply.
