Things went horribly, horribly wrong for Rio Ave striker Helder Guedes in his desperate attempt to emerge as the hero during his side’s Portuguese Primeira Liga match against Tondela on Monday night.

With his side already 1-0 up, the 30-year-old managed to coax a controversial penalty after collapsing in the box under the very softest of soft touches.

When the referee pointed to the spot, Guedes was adamant he would be the one to dispatch the spot-kick, firmly refusing to hand  the ball over to Rio Ave’s designated penalty taker.

He soon got his comeuppance…

If we’re being kind, we’d suggest that maybe, overcome by sporting decency, Guedes was simply passing the ball back to the Tondela goalkeeper in a gesture of fair play.

Then again, maybe it was just a really shocking effort from 12 yards.

The night then took a turn for the worse for Guedes, as his irate manager Miguel Cardozo had seen enough and hauled the forward off almost instantaneously with just 39 minutes of the game played…

If Guedes had scored, fifth-placed Rio Ave would have likely gone two points clear of Maritimo in sixth while moving one step closer to securing a historic league high finish.

However, they went on to draw 1-1, leaving the race for fifth wide open.

Head coach Cardozo later confirmed that ‘the Guedes issue’ was going to be dealt with in-house. Gulp.

Out of contract in the summer, the former Penafiel man may want to start exploring his options.
