Who’d be a referee? Lambasted by players and fans alike, no matter what decision you give, it takes a rather strange sort of person to choose to be the man or woman in black.

In Ethiopia Premier League, one poor official found himself on the wrong end of more than just harsh words, when he was attacked by one set of players in utterly appalling scenes.

The incident happened during a game between army side Defence and Welwalo Adigrat University. With the scores at 1-1, the ref adjudged the ball to have crossed the line and awarded a goal to Defence.

However, rather than accept the decision, the incensed Welwalo Adigrat players chased him off the pitch.

The ref tried to defend himself with a corner flag before a coach punched the poor chap to the ground.

Thankfully, the situation didn’t escalate, with the official safely getting away from the scene…

The coach in question has since been fired while all games in the division have now been suspended by the  Football Federation.

Pretty dismal scenes!
