The Seattle Sounders beat the Colorado Rapids 1-0 on the Rapids’ patch last night, but the game was mired by the fact that, just three minutes in, Sounders starlet Steve Zakuani (who, I think I’m right in saying, had trials with Everton not so very long ago) suffered a horrific injury – with a overly-heavy, mis-timed tackle from Brian Mullan snapping the youngsters’ leg in twain.

Tibia and fibula – kaput.

Warning for those of you with squeamish dispositions: the bone snap is picked up by the pitch-side microphone…

Yeesh.

Mullan was red-carded for his efforts and Zakuani later underwent successful surgery – though the forward is still expected to miss the next five months of the Sounders’ schedule.

Get well soon boyo.

He played for Arsenal’s youth team as well

  2. SDMichael says:

Defending in MLS is just horrible. This is what happens when crappy unskilled idiots are allowed on the field.

  3. Montesquieu says:

    That popping sound was atrocious.

That Brian Mullan should be suspended for a few games and made an example of. The FA or whoever is in charge of discipline should take this occasion to set a proper example for the future to dissuade any morons from taking out their frustration when they get embarrassed by another player.

  4. Rudy says:

What you don’t see in the video is later this idiot Mullen “defending” his tackle saying that he “got the ball” and later throughout the match the moron announcers defending Mullen as “a good guy”. Sickening as a fan of the Sounders and a fan of the game.

  5. Connor says:

i think the difference between this and other tackles is the spiteful aspect of it. mullan feels like he was fouled earlier so he goes in for a completely reckless challenge. that being said, GET WELL SOON STEVE, i’m more worried about that than the punishment for mullan

  6. Moop says:

Connor is spot on. You see Mullan, seconds before, getting tugged on while battling for the ball, ending up on the ground with his hands in the air looking to the official for a foul. By no means am I justifying his actions, but you can tell he was being reckless because he was frustrated not out of malice. I agree with Montesquieu as well. MLS should make an example of him. Football/soccer should be played aggressively, but within reason, keeping a level head. I’m not a Sounders fan, but Zakuani is fun to watch. Here is to a safe and speedy recovery mate.

mullan, former houston scum, is playing by the crapid’s mantra of dirty, overly-physical play. it’s not really surprising but is a shame as zakauni is one of the few truly exciting players to watch in mls. dan garber needs to put his big boy pants on and crack down on stupidly vicious play like this.

  8. gilly says:

i know how that feels to be honest, i broke my lower left leg, september 2010, mine was also Tibia and Fibula, nearly fully recovered now

  9. MaxMad says:

Some people never fully recover – or live up to their potential – after horrendous tackles like this. I’m saddened by the lack of discipline on Mullan’s side.

And that break.. not watching it again. Ever.

  10. Smelly Feet says:

I never watch the MLS but was anticipating this game, and all because of discovering Zakuani 2-3 weeks ago… So much for my luck.

Hope him the best in his recovery.

    FFFFFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUAAAAAAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK

  12. says:

Glad I traded him from my MLS Fantasy squad a couple of weeks ago. Still, I feel terrible for the guy, he was clearly one of the best in the entire league.

  13. theirishembassy says:

did anyone see the interview where he said it was a one off? he’s “made tackles like that before” and how he’ll “make tackles like that again”.

strange, doesn’t look mistimed to me!!

  14. Mike says:

Crazy, I saw this back when it happened and felt the player that committed the foul should be suspended until the injured player is back… It doesn’t matter to me whether it was malicious or frustrated…just bad judgement and there needs to be something to get the attention of players who do this.
