In which, with England U17s 2-1 up and with the clock ticking over into the final few minutes, Canada equalise at the death through an unlikely source – a long-range freekick from stand-in ‘keeper Quillan Roberts, who was only playing after first-choice stopper Maxime Crepeau picked up an injury against Uruguay in the previous game…

According to the match reports, England dominated the whole shebang from the get-go and were ridiculously unfortunate to concede such a flukey goal at such a critical time – but, then again, you can never really account for these things happening, can you?

Looks like Fielding really has a future in the English goal

  2. zdf says:

  3. chimpo says:

at least we’re consistent in our breeding of terrible keepers

  4. CFC_Jay says:

if that was supposed to be a freekick then surely it should have been re-taken………..i dont mean to be picky but i will……….that ball was clearly on the move as the Canadian keeper kicked it!!! Typical England though, not matter what age group :(

  5. steve says:

@Patrick: This was U17, so that’s definitely not Fielding in goal.

  6. jamie says:

    @ Patrick.

Well done. It’s not Fielding. Idiot.

  7. Montesquieu says:

England has to have the worst academy of goalkeepers in the world.

  8. Wilko says:

Surely it should be disallowed! The ball was still rolling!!

  9. Branden says:

@CFC_Jay It wasn’t a free kick. He moved up with the ball from his 18 yard box.

  10. Ryan says:

I cant believe bookies are taking action on these games….

  11. MARK says:

Man…England should just give up. Seriously? Canada? I mean as a Canuck I am proud, but seriously? I bet this kid played hockey till he was 12 and then decided, hell I can play goal and score on some English kids.

  12. Jose says:

The future of English goalkeeping looks as promising as ever…

  13. Soccer Professional says:

Looks like someone has been taking lessons from Paul Robinson!

  14. Leland says:

Yeah just to be clear, it was not a free-kick. The goalie just sauntered forward unchallenged…

As a Canadian, all I can say is… good job?

But seriously, that ended a 24 year losing streak at the World Cup level. 24 year!

  15. Englishman says:

That just sums up my ENGLAND and FOOTBALL…

  16. Orville says:

As #14 says, the goal really was scored in open play. Nobody bothered to track the goalie as he sauntered forward. Bet the manager had some choice words for the England goalie after the game!

  17. lordrt says:

English keepers have accustomed us to such things, so no big surprise in the end
