Edwin van der Sar’s testimonial evening at the Amsterdam Arena last night was a three-pronged affair, with the festivities opening with a match between Ajax U13s  and Manchester United U13s, with Poppa van der Sar’s son Joe turning out for United.

Secondly, an Ajax ’95 side took on Holland ’98 – with Marc Overmars scoring the only goal of the game for the Amsterdammers, and a bit of a beaut it was too…

Lastly, Ajax’s current first-string (there or thereabouts) took on a ‘Van der Sar Dream Team’ consisting of Gio Van Bronckhorst, Bolo Zenden, Gary Neville, Phillip Cocu, a fistful of Manchester United players, Deadly Dirk and Dennis Bergkamp – who grabbed the winner with a customary cool finish after a jinky one-two with Wayne Rooney…

Great keeper…so close to joining the exclusive club that is three champions league winners medals.

    Happy retirement.

  2. Manolo Garnix says:

Isn’t the AJAX team of ’95 very similar to the NED of ’98 as well to Barca in ’01. Some brilliant players and to see one of my alltime favs Overmars score such a goal is just warming my heart.

About 7 of the regulars at WC 98 played at Ajax in ’95
Blind and Rijkaard were retired and Litmanen and Finidi George had to be replaced for obvious reasons.

  4. Madjair says:

I can still remember both teams’ squads from the top of my head, names and numbers. Those were great times…

Edwin van der Sar, genuine legend.

  5. Sultan says:

    Sigh..What a goal by overmars…tears of joy !

  6. Joe says:

It was a great night, I was lucky enough to attend. Fun memory: Mick Hucknall turning up to sing songs at half time and after the last game. however, when he was singing ‘Holding back the years’ after the final whistle, VDS was doing his honour lap-obviously drawing the full attention of all on the pitch. This left Hucknall wandering around rather forlornly, still singing, around the dug out area-with everyone’s back turned to him…

did nwanko kanu also play for ajax 95? if he did then i’m guessing kluivert played for oranje 98. funny thing is that kluivert did not start in the 94-95 champions league final for ajax. and who replaced seedorf? because i think he didn’t come to the testimonial.

    Enjoy the time off Edwin!

Wow, those specialty teams…crazy to see Rooney drop the ball to Bergkamp. It’s amazing how many of these top-notch athletes remain in fabulous shape even after they hang up the boots. Big cycling fan and a lot of those guys are still in amazing shape in their 60s. Class.

Nice finish from Dennis as well!

that ajax team of the mid-1990s was pure class. back when champions league was JUST champs. so many of those players had solid careers at ajax and all over europe.
