If he’d goosed the referee instead of hitting him, he’d get a huge fine and be lashed, but since he merely struck him, he’ll probably only get a suspension….

we are talking Iran here, they might be punished by getting a few hundred public lashes on the same field that the offense took place. Heck, they might let the lashings be carried out by refrees too!
It sounds very wrong but I reckon in Iran he would probably get away with this if the ref was a woman. Since the ref was a man God only knows what’s going to happen to this guy he’ll probably lose his head (literally this time)!
In Iran he’ll be promoted to Football Czar by the council of Immans and awarded the Good Muslim medal for dealing a death blow to Western Imperialism!

Absolutely appalling. This is why there is really no reason for me to support the Iranian national football team. For what it’s worth, the commentators were both shocked and called the actions disgusting. Still, I hope that team is banned and heavily sanctioned. Iran’s government sucks, but the one thing they are good at is doling out punishment. Unless they’re bribed.
