Let go by Manchester United for his questionable attitude, youngster Ravel Morrison has taken little time in showcasing those iffy attitudes at new club West Ham.

The 19-year-old has been charged by the FA over a homophobic Tweet he sent early this month. The offending Tweet went as follows:

“crack head ? Go suck out u little f*ggot your a guy that talks if u see me you try slap me I’m in manchester every week.”

Morrison claims that his Tweet was written in response to racist Tweets he himself had received from Man Utd fans. However, once again, a footballer has failed to grasp the implications of using Twitter in, at best, a very silly way.

In a statement on their website, The FA said:

“West Ham United’s Ravel Morrison has been charged under FA Rule E3 for use of abusive and/or insulting words including a reference to a person’s sexual orientation.”

Fair dues to The FA for finally starting to treat homophobia with the same level of seriousness  as it treats racism. Finally football is starting to grasp that homophobic comments like Morrison’s are not “banter”, but simply abuse.

As for Morrison, he has until 1600 GMT on February 17 to respond to the charge.

I’m not sure I agree with this, was his use of the word faggot really being homophobic? Did his use of that word greatly offend or affect the life of a single homosexual? I doubt very much that it did. I think that as he has a bit of a reputation as a trouble maker the FA have decided to use him as a scapegoat in their crusade to demonstarte how they are trying to stamp out all that is evil in football. They also seem to pick and choose what they want to stamp out, I guarantee that if I got in an argument on Twitter with a footballer and he called me a fuc*ing Paddy (me being Irish obviously) that nothing would happen but it amounts to the same thing, not that I would want anything to happen as it would not affect me the same way as Ravel Morrison using faggot has no affect on homosexuals.
We are getting in to 1984 territory here where soon the government (or the FA!) will be forcibly preventing us from using anything but a list of approved words that they have come up with.

  5. Richard Dunne says:

@ Al, great point and very true, the ambiguity around these issues is too large to hand out punishments. I predict Heightism may be the next issue to be clamped down upon. I player may tweet about another players height, “hey shorty” and get banned because he has referred to the fact that the player is vertically challenged and used slang ‘shorty’ therefore it becomes derogatory.

this would probably make more sense as a short person would be born like this and homosexuality being a ‘life choice’

The fact of it is, Footballers get paid enough money that they should be ambassadors on and off the pitch. Idiot footballers spouting shite on twitter just makes the team look bad, look at Joey Barton and Wayne Rooney.

  7. Giancarlo says:

@Richard I don’t really think that you could say homosexuality is a life choice. I know as a straight man that I was born this way and haven’t felt any different. Regardless of the Darwinian points that “heterosexuality is nature” that may arise, there is much documented proof of homosexuality in animals.

Slightly off tangent, sorry. Ravel Morrison is a thug from what I’ve read, so stamp it out while he’s young like it should be done everywhere.

  8. man_dildo says:

i don’t get it. calling somebody a faggot or a sucker of dicks is not homophobic, sure it is abusive and intended to insult a person but it hardly matters if they’re gay or not when you use such words.
    its like “cocksucker”.
you call that everybody except the person who actually sucks your cock innit

  9. Mr. Sparkle says:

Footballers, the stupidest members of society with high income. How fucking wonderful…

  10. Scott says:

It’s sad that people think Morrison’s tweets were ok because no homosexuals were offended and by doing something about it, the FA is venturing into 1984 territory. Over-dramatic much? So if a white guy calls another white guy a N-bomb, that’s ok because no black people are around to be offended? Huh?

  11. Banjo says:

If a homophobic comment is made and nobody hears it..blah blah blah tree’s falling in forests

  12. rooney the nut says:

how can they charged a black player! RACIST FA! suarez is not guilty! idiot Fergie Association (FA)!

  13. R-Hops says:

@rooney the nut.. That comment was so ridiculous, it actually hurt my brain, terrible!

  14. MessiBalls says:

Racist abuse, Homophobic abuse. What is the difference? Why isn’t this in the headlines? Why isn’t he up in court?

Black payer calls another player a puff. Shock horror. I really don’t give 2 shits about these stories of verbal abuse but if you dish a punishment out for one crime you’ve got to do it for the next.

  15. Al says:

@ Scott, I think your missing the point that myself and Richard Dunne were making. It’s the inconsistency of the FA that causes the annoyance. Why zero in on Ravel Morrisons use of the word “faggot”? What does that word even mean? Is queer ok? How about homo? etc etc.The 1984 analogy was not being dramatic it was merely illustrating how the FA seem to deem some words appropriate and others not. It’s pure tokenism from the FA with Ravel Morrison and as @MessiBalls says if they are going to be hardline on this and not just doing it as PR then why wasn’t he given and * game ban or are they letting us know that homophobia is bad but racism is worse?

  16. Al says:

that meant to say 8 game ban

  17. ChristianVieri says:

Freedom of speech!!!those pseudo-stasi who want any non-pc comments to be expunged from the english language as “gasp” someones feeling might be hurt,or god forbid someone might be offended. If your offended CHANGE THE CUNTING CHANNEL!!!

Isiah 5:20 — Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter.

Yes, I agree this man isnt gay, but the fact is calling someone gay is now a bigger crime than the actions these homosexuals partake in. Saying ‘homosexuality is wrong’ is now the crime, not the unacceptable actions.

  19. KingEric7 says:

Wow, I bet all the gay football supporters were up in arms about that comment, oh yea they weren’t because, THERE AREN’T ANY GAY FOOTBALL SUPPORTERS!

  20. sloth says:

    @Al

YOU’ve missed the point of the punishment; Morrison used homosexuality as an insult. That implies Morrison thinks it’s bad to be gay, so in the same context any other word like “homo” or “queer” is inappropriate. It was a homophobic comment and if you can’t see that you need to take a step back and stop looking too closely.

  21. Gab says:

@orlando You’re an idiot. Please tell me you don’t eat shellfish or wear blended fabrics, because the Bible is against those too.

  22. Number 9 says:

Orlando your rubbish and so is your religion.

  23. Del says:

This guy is an absolute ************************* (insert your choice of insults) and fully deserves to be punished.
I think harsher punishments should be delt out for this kind of stuff and the media should make more of a hype about it to raise public awareness. We need to make football a sport that welcomes all people!

  24. Al says:

@ Sloth, I think your the one who needs to take another look at my posts. My whole point is the inconsistnecy of the FA and how this token gesture is a PR excercise by them. Answer the question in my post regarding the difference between the FA stance on racism and the FA stance on homophobia before getting on your high horse about what Morrison meant by “faggot”. Since when is it the FA’s place to make a determination on what is actually a slang word? For all they know he could have been calling the other person “a bundle of sticks” which is one of the actual meanings of the word. This is of course ridiculous and we all know what he meant but it still just smacks to me of the FA overstepping the mark when it suits them
