Despite a second-half revival, strugglers Sunderland failed to get anything out of their home clash with West Ham on Monday night. Andy Carroll opened the scoring for the Hammers early on before the striker set up Mohamed Diamé on 50 minutes to make it 2-0.

However, the Black Cats did their best to get back in the game, with sub Adam Johnson getting one back just after the hour mark. Gus Poyet’s charges pushed for a precious equaliser but it never came, leaving Sunderland stuck in the drop-zone, four points from safety. Sam Allardyce’s West Ham, on the other hand, are now 11th.
