West Ham’s Manuel Lanzini looked set to start Argentina’s opening World Cup game against Iceland on Saturday.
However, instead, the playmaker will be watching the game on television after that horrendous knee ligament injury suffered in training last week.
Lanzini has since opened up about his heartbreak, posting a rather moving message on Instagram, which said:
I feel pain for being so close to living the dream I had as a kid, to play a World Cup, but not being able to do it.
I want to thank my family, colleagues and the fans, for all the support I have received.
What a sad situation for the 25 year-old, who has been replaced in the Argentina squad by River Plate’s Enzo Perez.
Lanzini’s club, West Ham, will also now receive financial compensation for the injury to their player according to reports, with his wages paid by Argentina for up to 12 months or until he’s fit again.
Considering the seriousness of the injury, Lanzini may well be lucky to play any part in the 2018/19 season.
Let’s hope he eventually makes a full recovery and gets back to his best for both the Hammers and Argentina.
