When I put together a list of ten black pioneers in British football earlier this week, I shamefully failed to include West Ham legend Clyde Best, who boldly and often brilliantly forged a path for the likes of Cyrille Regis, Lawrie Cunningham, Viv Anderson and John Barnes.

So here, with apologies to Clyde, is a triffic gallery of him in action for his beloved West Ham:

The other three, left to right are Johnny Ayris, Ronnie ‘Ticker’ Boyce, and Bryan ‘Pop’ Robson.

all is forgiven…i remarked on CB’s omission from your list at the time and it is so fitting he has now been included…Thanks

Have a look in the photos at his vertical leap…only the keeper gets near him and only just and he uses his hands…

I saw him quite a few times in the early 70’s…

    a wonderful player…wonderful man…and a wonderful Hammer…always

    Nice one mate

I think it would be a fitting tribute to this gentle giant if West Ham were to invite him back to Upton Park for the final game to help mark the history of The Boleyn Ground

Clyde was a true gent like ” Big Trev ” and took so much stick in those days without the protection of society

    Great guy
