Wigan Athletic 2-3 Sunderland – Premier League – 19th January 2013
In a five-goal corker(ish) at the DW Stadium, Sunderland’s main man Steven Fletcher bagged a brace which helped his side to a fine 3-2 win away at Wigan.
The Scottish striker netted his goals in the first-half, the first a close-range follow-up and the second a fine strike from 16 yards. However, it was Wigan who opened the scoring after just four minutes, when David Vaughan put through his own net. Not long after that, the Black Cats drew level, courtesy of a spot-kcik from Craig Gardner, before Fletcher’s brace put the visitors in the driving seat.
In the second period, the Latics battled to get back into the game and were rewarded on 79 minutes, when Man Utd loanee Angelo Henriquez headed home. However, the home side failed to find another goal, leaving them to drop into the bottom three.
Roberto Martinez’s side now find themselves second from bottom, just four points clear of QPR. Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland, on the other hand, move up to 11th.
