After a stultifying first half at Eastlands, Carlos Tevez went into overdrive, bagging a hat-trick in the space of 12 second-half minutes. However, the key to City’s win was the red card shown in the 56th minute to Gary Caldwell for a two-footed tackle – a harsh decision and one that frustrated Wigan gaffer Roberto Martinez. After that, City overran the visitors, with Tevez in dynamic form.

The race for fourth place looks tighter than ever now, with Tottenham on 58 points, Man City on 56 and Liverpool (who have played one more match than Spurs and City) on 54. Wigan, meanwhile, still need to eke out a few more points to be sure of survival.

A harsh decision? It was a bloody joke, hopefully Atwell’s inept performances this season will stop the FA ‘fast tracking’ any more young refs before they’re ready.
