Luiz Felipe Scolari Announces Brazil’s 2014 World Cup Squad, And It’s Mighty Strong Lookin’…

Quite overshadowing Honduras’ squad announcement earlier this afternoon, Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has used his press conference today to announce the names of the 23 players he will be taking to the World Cup.

The squad is fairly tasty-lookin’, even if we do say so ourselves…

Goalkeepers: Julio Cesar (Toronto FC), Jefferson (Botafogo), Victor (Gremio)

Defenders: Daniel Alves (Barcelona), Maicon (Roma), Marcelo (Real Madrid), Maxwell (Paris Saint-Germain), David Luiz (Chelsea), Thiago Silva (Paris Saint-Germain), Dante (Bayern Munich), Henrique (Napoli)

Midfielders: Luiz Gustavo (Wolfsburg), Paulinho (Tottenham), Ramires (Chelsea), Fernandinho (Man City), Oscar (Chelsea), Willian (Chelsea), Hernanes (Inter Milan), Bernard (Shakhtar Donetsk)

Forwards: Fred (Fluminense), Neymar (Barcelona), Hulk (Zenit), Jo (Atletico Mineiro)

Bloody hell! Paulinho’s done well for himself there after a largely underwhelming first season at Tottenham.

Elsewhere, it’s all looking very strong – and just think of the players that Big Phil is leaving behind too: Kaka, Philippe Coutinho, Miranda, Filipe Luis, Marquinhos, Sandro, Lucas Moura, etc, etc.

Incidentally, this will be the first time since 1994 that Brazil’s World Cup squad won’t feature a player who has won a World Cup before.

How about that?

Gutted to see Maxwell and Henrique taken over Filipe Luis and Miranda, as those two really deserved it in my opinion. If Scolari starts the thugs Gustavo and Ramires together, i’m gonna cut myself. At least Rafinha isn’t coming.

Also, Jo and Fred? In the country of Ronaldo, Rivaldo, Romario et. al? Whatever happened to Alexandre Pato? Is he fat already?

I’d say Julio Cesar has done well for himself! Big Phil you sentimental old bugger, you!

Paulinho is in, but Coutinho isn’t? Is Scolari on crack?

To be totally honest, I don’t rate their strike force highly AT ALL. I think they punched far above their weight in last summer’s Confed Cup and they’ll be hard-pressed to do so again.

They’re going to be highly dependent on Neymar and a wonderstrike or two from Hulk. Apart from that, Fred and Jo aren’t much more than tap-in artists (not that there’s anything wrong with that; World Cups have been won with tap-ins).

Their midfield is very strong, but you have to wonder what will happen when that gets shut down by a disciplined team. I see a lot of players on that sheet that stick their head down and bustle forward but not as many that can pick a killer pass and break down a disciplined team like a player such as Coutinho might have added (if only as a super sub option).

You have to imagine how much better they’d have looked had Diego Costa not opted for Spain. Who, by the way, have 3/4 of their domestic teams in European finals and look stronger than ever.

Agree 100% brah. Shite attack force and no real decent goalkeeper in the side (why not Valencia’s Alves?). Brazil and big Felipao are gonna take it in the bunda this summer.

Miranda should go. Best performinging defender all season for Brazil. And no Lucas Moura!? The man is amazing to watch! I for one am gutted we wont be seeing him at the world cup. Him over Hulk every time for me.
