Proving that there really is magic in them thar’ World Cup waters, Costa Rica have made it through to the second round of the tournament for only the second time in their history courtesy of a frankly astounding 1-0 victory over Italy in Recife.
Following on from their opening 3-1 win over Uruguay, a fast, dedicated, passionate, energetic, disciplined performance against the overly-cocky and ordinary Azzuri saw Jorge Luis Pinto’s boys snaffle a famous 1-0 over the former World champions, booking themselves a berth in the knock-out round and lumping England out of the World Cup to boot.
They’ve also got a player who’s first name is ‘Yeltsin’ – oh, and when they have penalty claims turned down, their manager goes all “Suspicious Minds” on the touchline…
Brilliant, brilliant, brilliant.
Suddenly all those much-derided Costa Rica work sweepstake picks aren’t looking quite as hopeless!
