It’s hardly an understatement to say that there have been some truly exquisite goals knocked in at World Cups down through the years.

We’ve seen all manner of audacious volley, curler and pearler hit the back of the net over the course of 20 tournaments, though thanks to a FIFA vote, we can now officially laud one over all others.

FIFA asked fans around the world to vote for their favourite World Cup goal, with the initial 32-strong shortlist eventually whittled down to a winner – that winner being Manuel Negrete’s instinctive, flamboyant scissor volley against Bulgaria in the second round at Mexico ’86…

Negrete unleashed his unorthodox masterpiece as Mexico saw off their Eastern European opponents 2-0 in the sweltering heat of the Estadio Azteca.

On hosting duties for the tournament, El Tri made it through to the quarter-finals before going out on penalties to eventual finalists West Germany.

Every World Cup needs to held in Mexico. There’s something special about the joint, its a magnet for open exciting football.

The closest l saw to it was France 98, that was an excellent tournament too. Vibrant attacking football in truckloads.
