Ahmed Musa netted a couple of absolute belters, as Nigeria beat Iceland 2-0 in Volgograd.

Arsenal attacker Alex Iwobi dropped to the bench for the Group D clash, as the Super Eagles looked to get their first points on the board.

The first half was a rather turgid affair, with Alfred Finnbogason the closest to opening the scoring from a Gylfi Sigurdsson free-kick.

However, in the second-half, Nigeria sprung into life, taking the lead on 49 minutes, courtesy of a superb half-volley from Leicester City striker Musa after a speedy counter-attack.

Iceland looked for the equaliser but it was Nigeria were always a threat, with Musa hitting the crossbar on 74 minutes.

Just a minute later, Musa would get his second cracker of the game, this time latching onto a long ball before outpacing the Icelandic defence and rounding the goalkeeper.

Iceland had a great chance to get back into the contest when Finnbogason was fouled in the box by Tyronne Ebuehi.

A penalty was eventually awarded via VAR, only for Gylfi Sigurdsson to blast his spot-kick over the bar.

The game would end 2-0 to the Africans, who go second in the group with three points, three behind leaders Croatia, but two ahead of both Iceland and Argentina.

While Croatia have already qualified from the group, Nigeria, Iceland and Argentina can all still join them in the last 16.

The final round of games next Tuesday, with Nigeria facing Argentina and Iceland playing Croatia, should prove to be a dramatic finale.
