‘This Is An Idea Circulating Already’ – Sepp Blatter Hints At World Cup 2022 Re-Vote

By Chris Wright

FIFA’s decision to award the 2022 World Cup hosting rights to a tiny, Sheffield-sized, almost completely disinterested, sun-scorched, oil-rich desert atoll in the middle of the Persian Gulf was a sham – you know it, I know it, Sepp Blatter knows it.

Since the Sunday Times brought to light that, shock horror, the Qatar bid team (allegedly) bribed their way to securing the tournament, there has been worldwide clamour for the vote to be recast – a proposition that Blatter has refused to rule completely out of hand.

The Swiss meatball is quoted in the Telegraph as saying:

“This is an idea circulating already around the world which is alarming. But don’t ask me now yes or no, let us go step by step. It’s like we are in an ordinary court and in an ordinary court we cannot ask: ‘if, if, if’.”

“[FIFA] are anxiously awaiting for these evidences or non-evidences in order that we can take the adequate steps.

“We will organise and the newspaper (Sunday Times) have agreed that we will bring this whistleblower here to Zurich and then we will have an investigation of this.”

Blatter may well just be taking the diplomatic tack ahead of the imminent FIFA presidential re-election ballot (Sepp’s running against Mohamed Bin Hammam, who is from…delicious irony alert…Qatar!) but it’s good to know that the door is still slightly ajar vis-a-vis the 2022 World Cup and that there is still a sliver of hope that sense might prevail after all.

Hang on, what am I saying? This is FIFA we’re talking about here – expect the the 2022 tournament to be initially cancelled altogether then relocated to one of Saturn’s moons two days before it’s due to begin.

They should just sling the hosting rights up on Ebay a year before every tournament and have done with it.

haha I love this line Chris as it is sooo right. Quality

and for my money it will go ahead in Qatar I bet

  2. Andre says:

They should let countries bid for them and then the final winning amount will be donated to a charity in each bidding country.

  3. dave says:

They should change the host. Why would anyone want to go to a world cup in Qatar anyway? It’s fucking hot, no alcohol, get put in jail for public displays of affection oh and if you’re gay you also get put in jail. SOUNDS LIKE FUN…… yeah right.

  4. VAns says:

Oh my god, from aus, and this got me pumped, better be some truth to it!!! Although since when do they do re-votes?

Isn’t Grant Wahl still going for it? Or was that just a joke?

  6. Peter says:

Grant Wahl was going to go for it and he even laid down some of the most forward thinking ideas: A minimum of two four year terms for a President, Goal-line technology to be used in all major tournaments and leagues and FIFA’s financial books to be open to the public and the authorities to note any irregularities. Unfortunatley people at FIFA have to back you if you want to run and while he would have had support from within once he got his bid going, he couldn’t get it off the ground as noone dare back him against Blatter or Bin Hammam. So yeah vote for the devil you know or the devil you don’t know.

    this guy is poison

he would only allow a revote in order to get more bribes

  8. The Yank says:

Qatar was a shit pick, it was done for the money. Will it be changed? Not a chance in hell. Blatter is just trying to save face for the election coming up. He knows many people are dissatisfied with the Qatar choice, and knows Bin-Hammam would never support even a re-vote. He’s just trying to get people back on his side. Either way, its going to be a very hot summer in 2022.

  9. Anabelle says:

Qatar choice was a scam, everybody knows it.

Sepp is just trying to cover his behind. Won’t work. Sepp is corrupt.
Qatar in the Summer is a frigging nightmare.

  10. Joe says:

@ peter, shouldn’t that be ‘maximum’ of 2 4 year terms? Anyway, it reeks to high heavens. At least Bernie Ecclestone was the main reason for the success of the sport he treats like his personal plaything. Blatter just came in through his corrupt mentor Havelange and ruined everyone’s belief in the great game.

  11. DJ says:

Blatter will stoop to anything to get people talking about him, the sooner he is 6 feet under, the better.

  12. Fnarf says:

Qatar is a ridiculous place to hold a World Cup, but a revote would be as good as an admission that the first vote was bought and paid for. Admissions of anything are not a FIFA hallmark. And who’s going to be doing the revoting? The same batch of criminals who voted the first time.

You know what I’d do if I was elected? All board members must submit to total financial transparency — every bank account, every credit card, every paystub, every investment, every restaurant and hotel receipt, every bag of cash. The assumption at this point is guilty until proven innocent, and maybe not even then.

  13. Peter says:

@Joe Yes that should be a maximum of 2 4 year terms. It was to work exactly the same as the U.S presidential elections.
