Stewart Robson in happier times, before his relationship with Arsenal turned sour

Surely in the running for the award for being the most bitter man in football, Talksport pundit Stewart Robson has had yet another go at Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, this time over the Frenchman’s record in the transfer market.

News that the north Lodoners are now finally able to compete with Europe’s biggest clubs in terms of transfer deal hasn’t impressed the former Arsenal midfielder, who says:

“I am not expecting any marquee signings at Arsenal. There is a lot of talk about it, but I don’t know if I would trust Arsene Wenger with that money.”

“Over the last few years some of the players that he has said were going to be world class haven’t ended up like that – people like Philippe Senderos, Denilson, Marouane Chamakh, Armand Traore, Sebastien Squillaci, Nicklas Bendtner, Carlos Vela, Emmanuel Eboue, Park Chu-young, Lukasz Fabianski, Gervinho and Andre Santos.”

Robson, a fine combative midfielder who came through the Arsenal youth system before a series of injuries and loss of form saw him sold by George Graham in 1986, continued his typically scathing critique of the current Arsenal boss:

“Over the last two seasons they have spent some money on Olivier Giroud, Lukas Podolski, Mikel Arteta, Nacho Monreal, Per Mertesacker and Andre Santos. They haven’t been top-class players.”

“Some of the players who he has bought have regressed under him like Andrey Arshavin and Thomas Vermaelen. Nacho Monreal hasn’t been a good signing and Andre Santos has been hopeless for them.”

“Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski are past their best and Gervinho is another player who they spent a lot of money on and hasn’t really come to the fore.”

Now even the most blinkered Wenger-phile has to admit that their is some truth in what Robson says. However, to claim that Podolski, Arteta and Monreal for instance, aren’t top class players is just plain wrong.

What troubles Arsenal fans about Robson’s incessant sniping at Wenger is the fact that constructive criticism has been replaced by rather bitchy bile. Maybe it is linked to the fact that Robson was quietly ‘let go’ by Arsenal’s online arm at the end of last season.

    Robson is at it again.
When,if ever, will he stop. He mentions so many players there but does not say a word about all the others that have played under wenger.
Lets face it Robson is bitter and twisted now. He isn’t talking like a supporter, he is talking like an idiot.
He has been calling for Wenger to spend for so long, now he is saying don’t let him spend. Make up your mind Robson. Better still stop talking, just for a while and go away for a rest. You need it.

  2. Rob says:

More pathetic snipes by the very bitter Robson. His once balanced views have been replaced by bitter, agenda driven rantings that the likes of talkshite actively encourage.

  3. peter says:

It mystifies me why the media constantly waste time on the rants of this bitter little man I understand it emanates from talkS**t who ply there anti Arsenal campaign with boring monotony but why do the so called serious press pick it up an circulate it as being newsworthy. Robson was sacked from Arsenal and goes around spouting this rubbish to those stupid enough to listen, to be honest he’s quite a pitiful character and maybe the press should have more class the encouraging what is simply a personal vendetta by an ex employee.

  4. Mint says:

Does anyone actually listen to Robson ?… he wasn’t good enough as a player and he’s certainly not good enough to be a pundit

bitter and unemployed springs to mind.

    Robson , you’re a total Cnut

  5. Dominic says:

Whenever Stewart Robson spouts off about anything DON’T ring in to argue with him or contradict him. Every time someone reacts to his bulls*t the radio station owners think, “People are tuning in to the station”. If there is no reaction it will cause dead time on the radio and he will soon be booted off.

  6. JJ says:

Agree with all the comments here. Any time he is on he is sticking the knife into Wenger. He really does sound like a jilted bride. I don’t listen to his views anymore, and talksport bring him on just for the shock factor. Agree with Dominic’s comment, when he comes on, I don’t react and even change the radio station. His obvious sly method of getting his own back is getting pathetic now. Actually feel sorry for him now!?….Credit to Ray Stubbs for saying, what happens if Arsene does well?…and Robson goes quiet. Arsenal have done things the right way financially. All credit to them.

  7. jp plunier says:

We are happy to announce the wedding of Stewart Robson and Piers Morgan.

  8. Natty says:

Robson is more bitter than a bag of lemons. As a gooner for forty years I don’t give a toss what he says. True Gooners know the score and we are proud of our club and our manager is a big part of it. Maybe he would prefer if we was like them lot in N17. Jog on Robson and stop bleating like a fool. !!

  9. Jarren says:

If I can give an opinion from someone who’s not overly familiar with him…

…he sounds like a bit of a dick.

Yeah Gervinho is wank but Podolski, Giroud & Arteta are indeed 1st class players.

As for Monreal, jesus, give the guy a chance!

I fully expect Arsenal to be pushing top 4 next season.

    Why break the habit?

  10. AFCNumber7Shirt says:

What an impudent twaht Robson is. But he does know what doesn’t cut it at arsenal, having been released from both the playing squad and then the media staff. Has anyone yet completed that double, at any club?

    Wenger has his faults, sure.

But he does develop players. His record against other Prem mgrs is sparkling.

And note that there’s no mention made of Santiago Cazorla.

  11. Chris Hume says:

Predictable response from the Arsene fans.So who thinks Squillachi, Gervinho, Senderos, Bendner, Park, Denilson,Santos etc etc etc were good signings? Who thinks no trophies in 8 years is a good return for a £7m a year manager with the 4th highest wage bill in the Prem? Who thinks that a manager with absolute control over every aspect of coaching, signings etc and cannot be challenged on any matter is a good thing? If you answered yes to all thyree by all means continue in your sad sycophancy to your Glorious Leader, if however you think maybe, just maybe this guy is actually pretty mediocre for the wages he gets then perhaps you can see that a change of manager would be the best thing that could happen to the club. Won’t happen of course, it’s his club now. Keep up the good work Stewart, you care about the club and you know what is really going on, unlike these muppets who just slag you off every time you drae question their cult leader.

  12. Jacko says:

    Robson’s right.
