After formally announcing that he was leaving New York Red Bulls a week or two ago, Thierry Henry’s next career move had tongues-a-waggin’, with whispers on the wind that the 37-year-old striker may be about to return to Arsenal for one last fling before finally calling it a day.

Alas, it wasn’t to be, with Henry announcing his retirement from the game this morning, thus putting the kibosh on both the swirling speculation and on his illustrious career.

In a post on his Facebook page, Henry wrote:

“After 20 years in the game I have decided to retire from professional football. It has been an incredible journey and I would like to thank all the fans, team mates and individuals involved with Monaco, Juventus, Arsenal, Barcelona, the New York Red Bulls and of course the French National Team that have made my time in the game so special.

“It is now time for a different career path and I am pleased to say that I will be returning to London and joining Sky Sports. I will hopefully share some of the insights, observations and experiences I have learnt over the years with you guys.

“I have had some amazing memories (mostly good!) and a wonderful experience.

“I hope you have enjoyed watching as much as I have enjoyed taking part.

“See you on the other side…”

Henry then gave an introductory interview to his new employers, with the Frenchman dismissing rumours of another Arsenal return by comparing any hypothetical comeback with the gradual decline in the standard of the final “Rocky” movies.

“How many comebacks do you make?” said Henry. “It will turn out to be a bad movie at one point.

“We all love the first Rocky, but I don’t know about the last one.”

Here’s the natter in full…

The misty eyes? The doughy smile? Aww, Jamie’s in love.

Anyway, the salient info is that Henry will join Sky Sports as a “football expert and ambassador” from the start of 2015.

How about that?
