Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez has paid for two lorries laden with aid supplies to be sent to his hometown of Tocopilla after torrential storms caused devastating floods right across northern Chile last week.

Sanchez has a strong bond with his birthplace and immediately sent his prayers and best wishes back home when the floods first hit Tocopilla a week or so back, writing on Instagram:

I took my first steps here. Here I learned to play football. Here are my people and family, who saw me grow.

Because of where I grew up, I am who I am now: Alexis Sanchez.

I hope we hear that all Chileans are able to resolve these natural disasters. Forza Tocopilla and northern Chile!

Sanchez hasn’t just sat about twiddling his thumbs though. He took action to ensure the most needy families in his hometown were supported.

Several days on down the line, the Arsenal man paid for two trucks full of fresh water, food supplies and first-aid equipment to be sent to Tocopilla on Monday to help the town cope with the flooding.

Tocopilla town mayor Fernando San Roman confirmed as much to La Tercera newspaper:

He [Alexis] hasn’t forgotten about his land and that’s why he wanted to be involved.

He spoke to us in order to send aid to the people of Tocopilla.

We initially discussed bottled water, some basic first-aid products and clothing among other things and it’s already in the region.

As soon as the lorries are here, we’ll start distributing aid to the affected families, since Alexis asked us to help the families in the quickest and most direct way possible

He’s a good egg, that lad.
