Nigeria became the first African side to book their place in next summer’s World Cup finals after a narrow 1-0 win in Uyo on Saturday.

Alex Iwobi was the match-winner for the Super Eagles, with the Arsenal man coming off the bench to score in the second-half.

Both sides had chances to score, with Odion Ighalo, Jon Obi Mikel, Victor Moses and Wilfred Ndidi all going close for the hosts.

However, it would take the introduction of former England youth player Iwobi to make the breakthrough, with the attacker producing a clinical finish after a slick team move.

That goal would win the game for Salisu Yusuf’s side, who top Group B with a healthy haul of 13 points, a fine achievement considering this ‘group of death’ also included Algeria and Cameroon.

Nigeria are the first African side to qualify for Russia 2018, which will be the Super Eagles’ sixth World Cup finals. Expect the 21-year-old Iwobi to play a big part in that tournament.
