Arsenal were beaten 2-1 by Watford at Vicarage Road in Saturday’s late game, with the win catapulting the hosts into the unfamiliar territory of the top four.

The Gunners took the lead just befoe the break, with Per Mertesacker heading home a rare goal from a Granit Xhaka corner.

In the second-half, the visitors, who were without the rested Alexis Sanchez, had chances to extend their lead, with Alexi Iwobi and then sub Mesut Ozil failing to make the most of very good chances.

Directly after Ozil’s limp effort, Watford went level, albeit in controversial circumstances.

Hector Bellerin was adjudged to have felled Richarlison in the box by ref Neil Swarbrick, who pointed to the spot.

However, there was minimal contact, with the Brazilian going down far too easily.

Sub Troy Deeney fired home the resulting spot-kick, with Petr Cech once again failing to stop a penalty with the Gunners.

The Hornets pushed for a winner, as Arsenal started to crumble in classic fashion, with Deeney hitting the post.

Then, in injury time, Watford got the precious winner, with Tom Cleverley calmly firing home after Mertesacker had blocked a shot.

However, once again, there were question marks over the goal, with Deeney looking marginally offside in the build-up.

Still, the goal stood, with Marco Silva’s side moving into the top four of the top-flight for the first time since the 1982/83 campaign.

As for Arsenal, it was the same old story, with the Gunners’ wilting under pressure.

Indeed, speaking to BT after the game, Deeney pulled no punches in his assessment of the north Londoners, claiming they lacked ’cojones’…

Ouch!
