Arsenal – Aston Villa – Premier League – 24th March 2012

Arsenal increased their lead over rivals Tottenham to three points in the table after a comfortable home win against a very poor Villa side.

Despite losing Laurent Kosielny in the warm-up, which meant that the far less reliable Johan Djourou started alongside Thomas Vermaelen, the Gunners dominated the game from the off, with Kieron Gibbs netting on 16 minutes before Theo Walcott made it two on 25 minutes, superbly finishing after a fantastic pass from Alex Song.

Stephen Ireland did his best to push forward from midfield for the Villans, but in truth, the home side could’ve been six up by half-time.

The second-half produced more of the same, although the visitors did provide more of a goal threat. As for Arsenal, despite creating more chances, it took it took until the 90th minute, and a magnificent free-kick strike from Mikel Arteta, for the Gunners to make it 3-0.

Witth their seventh league win on the trot, Arsenal stay third while Alex McLeish’s Villans drop to a disappointing 15th place.

Walcott’s goal was genius. Dare I say it, almost Henry-esque.

    Arteta’s free kick? Sublime.

van Persie’s deft roll and shot? Superb. Superbly defended too.

Arsenal are a team that I enjoy watching. They play football that is flowing, intricate and dangerous.

Not always for the right reasons, it has to be said. Szczęsny is shaping up to be an excellent keeper but some of his kicks are suicidal. And Djourou can be a disaster on two legs.

But yeah, apart from still having some defensive frailties Arsenal are shaping up to be a right bastard hard team to beat.

I would like them to finish 3rd. They deserve it, especially after the season they’ve had.

Big respect from a Man U fan.

AM should simply be sacked for his post match comments, saying it is ‘unrealistic’ to come to the emirates and expect to win. unrealistic my ass, Aston Villa won there last season, its perfectly realistic, what is unrealistic is not having any belief and playing the most boring useless football. Truly he will be sacked come season end, there is no way after such an abysmal season and such low regard by the fans that he will stay on. About 50% or more of the Villa fans I know aren’t bothering to renew their season passes. We will be as deserted as Wigan if this twit is still around next year
