As the final act of what has proved to be a whirlwind day, Aston Villa have now sacked Steve Bruce with their (now former) manager embroiled knee-deep in an active police investigation into unlawful cabbage bombardment.

Bruce had the large, spherical vegetable chucked at him by an angry fan ahead of Tuesday night’s 3-3 draw against rock-bottom Preston. West Midlands Police have since vowed to track down and capture the anonymous allotment-based assailant.

Anyway, Villa are yet to formally confirm the news but several outlets (including Sky Sports) are reporting that Bruce has been let go having won just one of his last ten games in charge.

Indeed, despite cobbling together a promotion-chasing team at great expense, the club currently lie 12th in the Championship with just 15 points from 11 league games so far this season.

As for the next pigeon, both Dean Smith (Brentford) and John Terry (err… Spartak Moscow?) are both being mentioned as potential candidates to take over in Bruce’s stead.

Not massively inspiring, is it?
