Time to squeeze in another belated and bloomin’ astonishing wonder goal from the FA Cup third round on Saturday, namely Newcastle winger Hatem Ben Arfa’s meandering solo effort against Blackburn – a goal Toon boss Alan Pardew has since branded ‘the greatest ever scored’…

Nice, undoubtedly, but the ‘greatest goal ever scored’? Back in your box Pards.

Makes Messi look like a mediocre pub player

  2. Frei says:

Pardew said it was the greatest he had seen with his own eyes. Meaning, being at the actual game, therefore he did not state that it was the greatest goal ever but the best he had seen live.

  3. Davy says:

@ Tinez… You beat me to it, I was going to say Messi would be proud of that. Fookin awesome

  4. Bill says:

    Pardew is a twat.

Don’t sit on the fence, Bill. Say how you *really* feel.

Brilliant goal, absolutely amazing. Dunno if it’s the best one ever but it’s definitly up there with the greatest. Well done to Ben Arfa.

its also reminicent of Maradona’s goal in 86 and yes I’m old enough to remember it. I’m not saying Ben Arfa is as good as Maradona just that, the goal was

Waiting for the inevitable “Up and Hat-em” newspaper pun line to materialise.

  13. MGJ says:

If that goal had been done by Messi or Ronaldo you’d have people w*nking over it for years to come. Sadly for Ben Arfa he isn’t.

  14. Scott Mac says:

@ MGJ took the words right out of my mouth. This was a sublime goal.

  15. Matthew says:

I think because I read Pardew’s reaction before seeing the goal, I was a little disappointed when I finally saw it. I mean, it’s a great individual effort and all, but he never really gets passed any defender with any mouth-watering skill – except his last change of direction before he takes the shot. Otherwise he just charges down the pitch and no one tries to stop him, they just track back and watch him play.

@MGJ: Something similar has been done by Ronaldo, and Messi, but Ronaldo’s goal was incorrectly ruled out for offside and was only in a friendly match against Spain last year. Although Portugal still managed run out 4-0 winners that day. And Messi scores goals like Ben Arfa’s almost weekly, so it’s become no surprise anymore.

  16. Agree with MGJ totally. Had that been scored by a big name player it would be a contender for the Puskas Award. But it won’t be.
